Russell Klimas - Light Painter

When we first saw the work of light painting photographer Russel Klimas, we were amazed at the quality of imagery found on his Instagram account. It was apparent to us that teaming up would produce absolutely stunning photos taken at the Eddy Sound lighting lab. Russell’s skills paired with our lighting inventory would be a match made in heaven; at least that is what we told ourselves. We’re happy to report back that our assumptions were spot on.

Russel Klimas is a photographer who specializes in light painting. “Light painting is a form of long exposure photography. If you've ever seen photos of car trails or star trails, that is light painting. You can simply put your camera on a tripod and set your exposure time (or the amount of time your camera's sensor is exposed to light) by changing your shutter speed. Once you decide on your shutter speed then you take a light source of some kind and use it in front of the camera to create your light painting. This is the basic idea but you can expand upon it ten fold easily.”

Eddy Sound owner, Matthew Stoneback, has followed Klimas on Instagram for a couple years. When the company began to work with more and more creatives, Stoneback reached out to Klimas in an effort to partner with him to create some extraordinary projects. Klimas’s first visit introduced us to Vinita Mundluru. Mundluru spends her time teaching private yoga sessions, streaming a variety of content on her Twitch channel, and managing various hotels and Airbnb’s. Everything she does is done with a purpose in mind: “I care about individuals & mental health, because somebody helped me when I was depressed. Everyone deserves that - the world needs more love and kindness - so I try to be the change I wish to see.”

Klimas and Mundluru spent hours under the lighting lab structure, perfecting exposure settings while trying different light painting brushes and tools. During this time, we provided different palettes of color with our inventory of Blizzard Lighting fixtures and X-Laser Skywriter HPX lasers. By positioning our beams of light in different patterns, it allowed Klimas to use them as inspiration while literally painting light around Mundluru as she modeled. It’s an understatement to say we were awed by the end products that came from that evening. Watching the photos come to life was incredible to say the least. We are so grateful to have found someone in the local creative community that is as passionate about light and darkness as we are.
