The BRKN is one of the bands that has blown us away with everything they do. From the way they carry themselves, to their willingness to take risks, and their confident and charismatic attitudes both on and off the stage. The band formed approximately a year ago, with Mike Bokenkamp on drums, MJ Younkers on guitar, and Jacob Cadeon on guitar and lead vocals. Over their time together, they have transcended multiple genres and continue to find their sound in the best way possible: writing, recording, and touring. Having toured with the likes of The Dangerous Summer, The BRKN is already planning for a 2021 tour with Dollskin and other artists.

Be Cool is the first single off The BRKN’s debut EP, that was just recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. When asked about the meaning of the song, Jacob responded, “The song is basically about the interaction between two people that have two different mindsets towards love. One being that it’s romantic, forever long and just like it is in films. And the other being that love is raw and mindless, not everlasting but passionate nonetheless.”

The BRKN found their way into the Lighting Lab thanks to Director of Photography Gabe Jacobson of Storyteller Creative. Gabe reached out to Eddy Sound owner, Matthew Stoneback, and said, “Got another music video for you. I think you’ll like these guys!” This was with a week’s notice, but we were elated as one of our most aggressive and over the top truss structures was already in place.

The concept for the truss design was developed with a vision of placing a rock band under it. A flying “V” of truss was rigged upstage, the perfect location for a drum riser underneath. Moving heads with the ability to produce precise beams as well as kaleidoscope effects were hung overhead and flanked both sides of the lighting lab. Once the band arrived, it was determined the use of our Staging Concepts’ acrylic decks would be perfect for the front of the drum riser. Taking the set-up to the next level, a single 4’ by 4’ acrylic deck was placed center stage for Jacob to perform on. All of the acrylic decks were under-lit with Blizzard Lighting Skybox W-DMX fixtures, allowing for seamless control from the lighting console.

After an evening working with THE BRKN we can definitively say Be Cool is in fact, extremely cool. We suggest checking them out on all social media channels, hitting the follow button, and waiting anxiously for the remaining songs on their upcoming EP to drop. The Be Cool music video clearly shows the band’s never ending stage presence, captured by the artistic eye and incredible camera work of Storyteller Creative. A truly epic concert-like experience is what you will find when watching this music video. We can’t wait to work with The BRKN again.
