Tigerwine - “Anteroom” Music Video

Tigerwine Screen Grab

Tigerwine was the second musical talent to film a music video in the Eddy Sound Lighting Lab; visiting the warehouse just one day after Jarrod Gipson. Introduced to us by director of photography Gabriel Jacobson from Storyteller Creative, Tigerwine is a local, post hardcore band signed to Tooth & Nail Records.  Tigerwine joins the ranks of Underoath, Project 86, and Thousand Foot Krutch, all signed by Tooth & Nail Records. They began touring nationally in 2015, and the current members have been playing together since 2016. Tigerwine is made up of Hayden Trobee (Guitar and Vocals), Steve Lichtenwalter (Guitar and Vocals), Sean McKnight (Bass and Vocals), and Shane Riley (Drums).

The initial concept for the video shoot was simple. A stark white background the band would stand in front of and perform. It was made from white shower curtains placed in front of 14 Blizzard Lighting CobZilla RGB lighting fixtures. The fixtures packed a punch providing the look Jacobson and Tigerwine were looking for. The initial footage captured looked stunning, but it didn’t take long for Jacobson’s creative mind to start churning. After a few takes, removing the shower curtains was discussed and then taken down. For the rest of the shoot, Tigerwine stood in front of a blinding wall of light. The mood was set and, take after take, was flawlessly captured. A mid-shoot decision was made that helped produce the final product now available for viewing. I think everyone who watches the video will agree it was a great choice.

Previously, all of my songwriting has been about similar themes and staying true to whatever theme I honed in on. This time I wanted to write a bunch of songs about a bunch of different things and this is one of the more ‘out there’ songs on the record lyrically.
— Hayden Trobee Re: Anteroom's Inspiration

As we progressed through the night of shooting, many concepts and ideas were thrown out, all which helped shape the final product. First, Jacobson had the phenomenal idea of leaving the lens disconnected from his RED Digital Cinema camera; a technique known as lens whacking. This provided the lens flares seen throughout the final video (no, these were not added in post). Also, colors were included outside the original stark white; blues, cyans, pinks, and magenta were added into the mix. This provided a moody and dramatic look to Jacobson’s footage which assisted with his stunning color grade. These are just some of the reasons we’ve enjoyed working with Storyteller Creative over the past 5 months. Jacobson’s originality, artistry, and drive provides inspiration and energy to our passion projects.

The innovative additions could have ended there with a great final product, but the creativity and flexibility of the shoot continued as more and more of the Eddy Sound inventory was used to enhance the video. Our Antari M-8 fogger was utilized to push artificial clouds past Hayden as he lay on the floor singing towards Jacobson who was perched above him on a ladder. We also constructed a small inverted U made from Global Truss to mount in the center of the lighting lab’s structure so Hayden could hang upside down from it. This provided for one of the more iconic shots as Jacobson twisted the camera in a 180+ degrees with Hayden’s face center of frame. Finally, our Sparktacular FX Machines were pulled out in the middle of the night to provide epic slow motion shots of each of the band members playing their guitars. Because, what says rock and roll more than simulated fire?

Behind the Scenes of Tigerwine’s Anteroom Music Video

This behind the scene video was supplied by Chris Willis, a Colorado Springs-based videographer with a passion to bring top-notch video content to the music industry and live event scene. When he was approached by Gabe from Storyteller Creative to cover BTS for Tigerwine’s Anteroom music video, he jumped at the opportunity and had a near-final draft ready within a week of the shoot. He has since been through the Lighting Lab for a few more projects, and recently directed his first music video at Eddy Sound which will be premiering in the next few weeks. With 8 years of video experience under his belt, and the tools to match, you can always expect excellence in his work.
